Join us on a tour of Ma’aloul and screening of Michel Khleifi’s "Ma’aloul Celebrates Its Destruction" in the village church. This is the opening event of our homage to one of the founders of the Palestinian cinema at the 48mm Film Festival.
Ma’aloul (Ma'lul) is a Palestinian village in the Lower Galilee. In 1948, it was destroyed by the Israeli armed forces and its inhabitants expelled either to Lebanon or to the neighboring towns of Yaffat al-Nassira and Nazareth. Today, cactus, olive trees and fig trees grow between the remains of their houses. Only two churches and a partially destroyed mosque still stand bearing witness to the once lively village of 700 people. An Israeli military base has been built on the village lands and a pine tree forest planted by the Jewish National Fund.
The tour will be guided by Umar al-Ghubari from Zochrot. You are welcome on board of our bus leaving from the entrance to the Arlozorov Train Station in Tel Aviv at 12:30 or arrive directly in Ma’aloul at 14:00. Screening will start at 16:00, followed by a Q&A. Estimated return to Tel Aviv at 19:30.
