- What is the Nakba?
- Were Palestinians expelled or did they flee?
- Does learning about the Nakba mean that Jewish rights are negated?
- Did the Nakba occur only during the 1948 war?
- Why are there so few options to learn about the Nakba?
- How is the Nakba part of our reality in Israel today?
- How can learning about the Nakba open new possibilities for the future?
Israeli collective memory emphasizes the Jewish history of the country, and largely denies its Palestinian past. The formative events of 1948, for example, are known to us as a war of liberation, but few of us learned about the Palestinian tragedy - the Nakba.
Zochrot, an organization working to raise awareness about the Nakba and the Return, is opening a new study group on Tuesday, March 12th, 2013 in partnership with 'This is Not an Ulpan' in Tel Aviv. The group is for people who want to learn about the Nakba and improve their Hebrew at the same time. The main principle of TINAU (This Not an Ulpan) is that we don't learn Hebrew, we learn in Hebrew! The idea of TINAU is that we don't hide from the tough realities of this place. Rather, we actively and critically engage with them in Hebrew.
During the course-" How do you say Nakba in Hebrew?"- we will examine what we were told about what happened here in 1948, and more importantly, what we were not told. We will examine various voices, places and stories on the Nakba. Further we will look at how collective stories shape collective identities and how all of this affects the perception of the future we want to build here.
- The course consists of 10 lessons
- Meetings take place once a week, on Tuesdays at 19:00 to 21:00
- The first lesson will be held on 12/3/13
- Learning will be conducted through workshops, lectures, a tour and various materials.
- The course requires a commitment to attend all meetingsץ
- The course costs are on a sliding scale from 100-300 shekels).
